Plans for the Summer
I have finished work for the summer and have decided that it is high time I spent some quality time on the layout. There are a number of issues that need to be addressed in order to make sure it is fully functional.
Electrics
I find myself being haunted by the ghost of poor electrical fidelity. There is a weak link in the circuit around the points. I am intending to solve this using some proper track cleaning materials. The track has not had any proper use due to there being a considerable lack of power to the northern platform and the siding. This all stems from my over exuberant use of pva glue when I ballasted the track. I plan to get some proper track cleaning solution to sort this out and hopefull restore the running to what it used to be like. I am guilty of neglecting this aspect of the railway but due to lockdown I haven't been able to go out and purchase the items I need to resolve these issues.
Carriages
I have been looking through the very large selection of coaching stock that the railway has and I have counted 23 items of rolling stock. This is more than the Talyllyn and a good deal more than a railway of this size really needs. I am planning on completing the refit of the new Osterbahn Coaches during the summer break. I have found somewhere that sells the paints that I have been looking for and will be going and getting them in the next week or so. I have so far removed the decals from the bodies and started to build the gangways. I am using my normal method of a rectangle of styrene around the doorway. The mouldings on these carriages are very detailed so I will use the thin profile styrene so that people can get a glimpse of the detail that lies beneath. The interiors of the carriages don't really need any work except the addition of passengers. The luggage coach has a small office space where staff can sit and complete work so I will add a guard to one of these compartments.
Locomotives
I have hardly used the locomotive fleet during the lockdown period. This has meant that there is a lot of servicing that needs to be done on the locomotives. I have sorted out the Baldwins and the new Diesel No. 11. The Prince has a new chassis and it needs to be run in. I haven't run it with the tender yet so I need to have a look at how it performs with the new chassis.
The Tattoo has received another coat of paint and I just need to give the bufferbeams another coat to hide any blemishes. This is very quickly becoming one of my favourite locomotives.
I have arranged a swap of one of my old N gauge locomotives for a new Rheanas chassis for the Dolgoch locomotive. I am hoping to that it running alongside all the other Talyllyn based rolling stock.
Ziller is in serious need of attention. It has not run for almost 6 months and is in serious need of overhaul. The chassis is seriously gunked up with all sorts and is going to need a complete rebuild in order to clean it and get it back to running condition. I have a few ideas about what to do with it but I am anxious to get it back into action if only to pair it with the new Osterbahn style coaches.
Scenery
The scenery has come on in quite well through the lockdown. I need to get hold of some foliage for the layout. Now that shops are open again I will be able to get hold of some lichen and other foliage materials to give the layout some semblance of being a real place.
