Rolling stock.... what a locomotion

Image
I'll be the first to admit the thought of scratchbuilding and kit making is a little daunting. To begin with I ventured onto eBay to purchase my rolling stock. I was looking for something ready to run that I could still customise to make my own. Lo and behold I found a small "Eger-Bahn" 0-4-0 tank engine and a diesel locomotive. They both looked in reasonable condition but would need a little bit of love externally. I need to test them to see if they work. But that will come later once I have bought some new track for my layout.

A lesson in history.

Seeing as the railway is a complete work of fiction, I have begun to invent a history for my railway to give it some meaningful context. I'm going to keep adding to this section as I go along . https://broneffans.blogspot.com/p/the-railway-story.html?m=1

The little Old Engine.

So a second foray into the murky world of eBay has yielded a lovely little white metal Fletcher Jennings 0-4-2 'Talyllyn'. I must admit this is a bit of a coup for me. Skarloey was always a favourite of mine from my childhood and I loved seeing the real thing a couple of years ago. I didn't care what condition it was in but I had to have it for my layout. The best part for me was I would get to choose the livery.  At present it is basecoated in GWR Indian red.  As for couplers I took a trip to a local model shop. I won't name names but I was practically laughed out of the shop when I asked for advice on how to fit couplers. A most unpleasant experience indeed.  However, I was saved by the wonderful team at @BronHebog who gave me some advice that I just need to find time to put into practice. Many thanks must go to Rob or Himself I can't thank you enough for being understanding.  Check them out at: http://bronhebog.blogspot.com/?m=1 Anyway...
So here is my first foray into the world of narrow gauge modelling. I have owned two model railways in my life. The first being a Thomas the Tank Engine train set on a baseboard with some cardboard and plastic buildings. It was special to me because it was a Christmas present and it was a barrel of laughs to play with. My Dad helped me with the construction and my Grandad would show me how to operate it. Happy memories. The second was an old N-gauge layout that was my Grandads. He passed it on to me for my 16th birthday and while it was a more serious piece of work for me to look after I had to put it to one side whilst the call of university beckoned me. No room for model railways in student digs. Fast forward ten years and I'm now happily married in my own house and lots of spare time. What an excellent opportunity to start a new project. I decided on Narrow gauge for three reasons. 1st Narrow gauge modelling consists of lots of scratch and kit building which I love 2nd...
